Abstract
llevara a cabo.
In January 2011 a conflict broke out in the Magallanes region due to the government announcement to raise the price of household gas by 16.8%, which started a new cycle of regionalist protests. The household gas use is essential for this austral region, since it is practically, the only source for heat generation in domestic environment. Magallanes’ citizens immediately reacted and massive manifestations and protests took place against the sudden rise of the gas prices, leading to an indefinite strike, highlighting the serious problem of the relationship between regions and the central government in Chile. Therefore, in this article, five empowerment factors which might explain the success obtained by the Magallanes’ population to not carry out a rise on gas prices will be analyze. In addition a short contrast to Argentinean Patagonia will be carried out.
