Abstract

Applied research and policy models in the field of education, just as In other fields of social studies, is usually confronted with the serious obstacle of insufficient empirical Information. Such Information would allow a more exact analysls of different theoretical hypotheses concerning the educational process, as well as an evaluation of the efficiency and impact of alternative educational policies. This fact, critical to the development of the educational system in Latin América, has been confronted in a new way by the REDUC system (Red Latinoamericana de Información y Documentación en Educación). This is a prívate initiative that offers a public service on the regional level; a cooperativo system in which prívate research centers, organizations, and Ministries of Education work on equal footing; and a documentation service which is closely linked to research activities and demonstrates concern for the development of educational policy. This system substitutes, at least in part, other alternative to distribute scientific work, like specialized journals, which are less developed in the field of education.
